Light and Shadow-Yves Brayer and Contemporary french art
September 11th > November 29th 2027
Throughout the history of art, some works reflect the spirit of their time, while others carry it across the ages. Yves Brayer’s oeuvre belongs to the latter, opening a window onto Europe’s cultural landscape at a time of profound political and social change. “Light and Shadow: Yves Brayer and Contemporary French Art” brings together historical and contemporary French art, inviting viewers to consider light and shadow both as visual phenomena and as enduring metaphors for the human condition.
It is this interplay of light and shadow that unites the exhibition. Alongside Brayer, seven contemporary French artists offer independent reflections on themes that resonated in his work almost a century ago: the experiences of war and peace, human vulnerability, the fragility of freedom, the importance of memory and the pursuit of light in a world marked by tension and uncertainty. The diverse generations and visual languages represented attest to the capacity of French art to continually engage with fundamental existential questions, each time discovering new ways of visual expression.
The exhibition is therefore neither a historical survey nor a stylistic comparison. Instead, it offers viewers an experience where past and present coexist in dialogue, each retaining its own historical identity. Within this context, Brayer’s paintings take on renewed resonance, engaging with contemporary work that affirms art’s capacity to transcend temporal boundaries.

BERNARD BUFFET - Une Amitié d'Artistes
May 7th > November 9th 2026
Their paths first crossed in 1947 during the jury at the École des Beaux-Arts, and then again in 1948 at the Salon d'Automne, where Bernard Buffet was admitted as a member. But their true friendship blossomed much later, in 1974, when Brayer actively campaigned for Buffet's election to the Académie des Beaux-Arts. This was achieved on January 22, 1975.
Yves Brayer and Bernard Buffet shared much more than their passion for painting: a profound love for art, whether ancient or Flemish, Romantic or modern. They admired Gros, Delacroix, Géricault, Goya, and Francis Gruber—a close friend of Brayer's. Both were staunch defenders of Figurative art, stubbornly rejecting Abstraction. They were also tireless workers: one painted by day, the other by night.
A selection of works from 1947 to 1998 offers a glimpse into the breadth of Bernard Buffet's oeuvre. This exhibition, "Une Amitié d'Artiste" pays tribute to this rare relationship, built on deep friendship and mutual admiration. To celebrate it, works by Yves Brayer are displayed alongside those of Bernard Buffet in a sensitive and understated dialogue, just as Bernard Buffet's works reinterpret the permanent collections.
On view from may 7th until November 9th at the Yves Brayer Museum in Les Baux-de-Provence.
